Tiger Will Be Back Better Than Ever
I happened to catch Tiger on TV last weekend while he was in the booth at the Chevron World Championship. Just listening to him and Hank Haney talk about his game and his recovery thus far, I am confident Tiger will be back stronger than ever.
You could see it in his face and hear it in Haney’s comments. As Tiger said himself, his body is ready to go, but not the ligament yet. I had my own ACL repaired in 1994 and I remember the surgeon’s explanation that even though you can feel pretty good fairly quickly after surgery, it takes 2 years for the ligament to be completely healed because it takes that long for it to develop a blood supply.
As competitive as Tiger is, he has the discipline to wait it out and not temp fate. A friend of mine didn’t wait and ended up tearing the same ACL – not something you ever want to do. I believe the great guard on the UConn women’s basketball team – Shay Ralph – did the same thing by coming back too quickly after surgery.
This means that Tiger may not be playing at Augusta, or the US Open or even the British Open next year. But when he does come back, he’s going to be on form quickly. I honestly believe he’ll even be better than he was.
Many athletes lose something during a prolonged recovery from injury because they can’t stand the mental aspect of it. Tiger, being Tiger, it will only make him stronger. He’ll find some way to turn the downtime to his advantage. Note to the rest of the PGA guys; you had better kick it up a notch or be left behind – again.
