Thursday At The Open

Rain, rain and more rain. Play cancelled with hardly any play. The good news – Friday’s forecast is for no rain. Saturday looks to have a few passing showers and thundershowers. Sunday could also have thundershowers, while Monday looks good. Don’t be surprised to see the final round Monday.
Does the weather change who might win? Definitely! Just like horses, some players are mudders. I was never that good as an athlete, so I liked lousy conditions. I felt they evened the playing field for me. Playing in bad weather you have to be flexible. You can’t let wet grips, rain down your back, or playing in rain gear distract you. Tiger has been prone to adverse effects from the conditions. However, I believe he is so focused and confident this week that it won’t be the case. It’s possible that some European players will do better as the British players in particular play in wet windy conditions much more often.
I was remiss yesterday in my predictions in that I forget to talk about Ian Poulter. He’s taken his very good game up a notch this year and has enough confidence to believe he can and should win. He might very well be a factor come Sunday, or Monday. If he can pull it off, I believe he’d go on to be a top 5 golfer for a number of years.
Chris Berman – Boomer - appears to be a nice guy, but he’s no golf commentator. I wrote the same thing last year and from what I’ve seen today, he’s no better. He may understand the nuances of football, but he doesn’t get it with golf. There are so many good golf commentators out there, why didn’t ESPN go with someone else. He also talks too much. In golf you don’t talk over the action, you let it unfold for the viewer.
Why isn’t Lee Trevino a golf color guy? There aren’t many guys with more knowledge of golf and the pro game. When someone has let him talk, his comments are colorful and on the mark, with insights I’ve never heard from Miller or Faldo. No more discrimination! Let the ‘Merry Mex’ give it a shot. The game needs someone to set the drama and not just commentate and maybe Lee is that guy. He certainly entertained the galleries when he played. I’d love to see him try.
