Sports Scandal Trumps Play
Have you noticed these days how actual play on the course, field, court and ice is less important than everything that happens on the periphery.
I haven’t seen more than a sentence about how Tiger might play at the Masters, everything is about how the media, sponsors and fans might react.
Maybe my memory has been compromised by aging, but I thought one of the attractions of sports is that it helped you forget all the pettiness that generally constitutes our daily life.
We could just concentrate on how someone is playing; are they keeping their drives in the fairway or are they getting up and down from the bunkers.
Each day it seems as if skills and actual performance are relegated more and more to the backseat.
I’ve got nothing against John Daly, but over the last month on The Golf Channel I’ve seen more footage of a melancholy John looking out from dimly lit smoke filled rooms than I have wedge shots.
Hey, who needs golfers on tour anymore, let’s find America’s biggest losers and make a new Tour. Forget actual play, we’ll just cover them during weigh-in.
There will always be those who, when it comes to sports, prefer the stories about guns in bars, spousal cheating and drunken orgies more than coverage of actual play and that’s OK, but keep it in on the Entertainment channel.
Sports channels can’t deny these distractions, but keep 90% of the focus on the sport.
