Pushing The Muscle Limits

twoodsmuscle Pushing The Muscle Limits

A Ripped Unhappy Tiger Woods

Doug’s article two weeks ago about Tiger being too pumped up, really got me to thinking. Tiger is the most ‘pumped up’ guy on tour.

I don’t think anyone would dispute that he’s also the most pumped up guy who has ever been on tour. Has he finally reached the limits of more muscle equating to better golf?

I don’t believe Tiger himself knows where the limits are. He’s experimenting as he is wont to do. After all, muscles helped him dominate over the last 3 or 4 years so maybe he still believes ‘more is better’.

But, if being pumped really was the key to a solid repeatable golf swing, then we’d see bodybuilders leaving their sport by the droves to become pro golfers.

And Arnold Schwarzenegger would be the leading money winner on the Champions Tour instead of the governor of California.

I believe any logical person, who’s played much golf, will conclude that there is such a thing as ‘too much muscle’ for a golfer. In order of importance, a good golf swing is about flexibility, stability, speed and then power.

If you build giant biceps, how is this really going to help your golf swing? At some point muscles have to do a golfer more harm than good and Tiger may have finally crossed the line.

One last point, his putting hasn’t been up to his own standards since he came back from knee surgery. Could those massive, twitching biceps, triceps and pecs have something to do with that.

Putting is more like darts than the clean and jerk and is another sport where too much brawn hurts rather than helps.

I’m not sure you understand what “pumped” means. It doesn’t matter because Tiger isn’t anywhere near as jacked as you think he is. As a trainer on the PGA Tour, I’ve seen him up close and this concern about “too much muscle” is unfounded. Tiger’s in great shape. That’s all that needs to be said.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for stopping by and posting on the GolfDash Blog.

I can certainly see your point. I have, too, done quite a bit in fitness and training but do differ
from you slightly in his training methods.

Fitness, of course, needs to support the precise game of golf and currently that is just not happening
for Tiger.

And it’s debatable whether there is a direct correlation.
