Ogilvy, 2009′s Best Golfer

The World Match Play Tournament is over and it’s no surprise that Geoff Ogilvy won. He’s been a great talent waiting to happen since he won the U.S. Open in 2006. This year things started to click early after wins in Australia and Hawaii.
His winning in Tucson wasn’t a mistake. He played brillant golf all week. He clobbered Paul Casey in the final and Casey played well. Ogilvy always knew how to play, now he knows how to win. Make no mistake, even Tiger at full force wouldn’t have beat him Sunday, unless he succumbed to intimidation. But with his cool demeanor that wouldn’t have been likely.
I love Ogilvy’s game which is to ignore everything around him including the other players. It has to be unsettling to the other golfers when the guy you’re playing is unflappable. Geoff used to have a big temper problem, but has overcome it’s paying off big time. Today’s tournament layouts are so demanding that no one can afford to waste energy being angry. Everything you have has to go into playing.
It’s interesting to note that Ogilvy appears to have noticed what most of the announcers didn’t, that being the play of Rory McIlroy. You don’t expect to see a tournament winner accept the trophy while pointing out the play of a golfer that didn’t even make the semis. Ogilvy played McIlroy and was obviously very impressed. The kid is only 19 and took the eventual tournament winner through 17 holes and that while Ogilvy was on fire. As Geoff took great panes to notice, Rory McIlroy is going to be one of the best pro golfers in the world before long. The writers and newscasters could do the game a favor by paying attention to someone other than Tiger.
Ogilvy looks poised to do some real damage on tour this year. Don’t be surprised to see him in the thick of things on Sunday at courses that suit his game, like Augusta National. He can play, but what makes him really dangerous is the ability to putt under pressure. He’s 17 and 2 now in the Match Play Championship and that’s a better record than even Mr. Woods.

Was just reading an article in todays paper here in Australia – his wife reckons it all has to do with him being a father. It’s calmed him down, made him more patient etc.
Imagine how well he’d go if he had two or three…
