It’s that when time of year again when we all try to guess who will triumph in the upcoming Masters Golf Tournament.
The Top Dogs
So, who’s hot and who’s not. World number 1 Dustin Johnson just looks pretty unbeatable nowadays (the last 3 in a row!). He’s got every tool in the bag including superior length. Most importantly he’s got another major in his pocket so he’s “knows” he can do it. That’s pretty potent stuff.
Currently placed at around 6/1 to take the championship, he is very likely to be backed by the bookmakers going into April. Keep an eye the on these predictions at Free Super Tips if you are considering a punt – we expect him to remain odds-on favourite till at least the opening tee-off.
Rory McIllroy (the current World #3) needs the green jacket to close out the grand slam in his young career. He’s a bit of a streaky player not the sort of day in day out consistency of someone like DJ. Personally I think it’s hard to maintain that when you’re constantly taxing your system in the gym. I maybe wrong, but. . . Anyway, we all know he has the capability but it needs to come together in a perfect storm.
Current world #3 Jason Day again has all the tools but after dropping out of the recent WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Championship due to his Mom having cancer complication it’s unlikely he’ll have the focus he needs. Then again, it could fuel and inspire him instead. We’ll have to wait and see.
Then you have Hideki Matsuyama at 4 and Henrik Stenson at 5. Both solid players and now that Stenson has a major (Open Championship in 2016) he just might sneak under the radar.
What about Jordan Spieth? Well the only issue is what happened in 2016—that is a quadruple-bogey 7 after hitting 2 balls into the water at the short par 3, 12th hole. It’s got to be in his head. Too soon to shake that sort of thing. That being said, I’m not leaning in Spieth’s direction in this Masters.
Obviously I can’t cover everyone but here’s a few that have piqued my interest lately.
Phil Mickelson. Good ‘ole Phil. I mention him because even though he’s 46 years old now he’s playing some of the best golf of his career. It’s just March and he’s already played 7 times this year with 3 top 10’s and (almost) 3 top 20’s. His secret weapon? He knows Augusta.
Adam Scott. He’s been quietly lurking this year. 2 top 10’s and 3 top 20’s so he’s playing solid golf. But he has to putt well at Augusta.
I’m going to lump these 2 guys together—Rickie Fowler and Sergio. Rickie has
the reputation of being a bit flippy the the bottom of his chips and if not precise, well, forget it. Always a fan favorite, and not afraid of the big stage, it just might be his turn (and orange and a green jacket would go great together!)
Sergio is my favorite (he’s gotta win a major this year!) He’s settled in his personal life and just looks renewed to me somehow. He one of the best ball strikers in the game and perfectly suited to Augusta. Now, Sergio—just do it already!
This young guy (22), Jon Rahm, from Spain is a rookie at Augusta but man does he have game. He can keep up with DJ off the tee and he has that fiery Spanish nature in him. Very impressive.
I’ll mention just a few other possibles. I always like Justin Rose but he needs to make more putts—everything else is in super shape. Justin Thomas won the first 2 tournaments of the year and looks like he’s getting more and more comfortable on the big stage.
Finally, Master’s predictions for — will Tiger play? He stated, he’s doing “everything possible” to play in this years Masters. Will he? It’s a long shot, for sure.
The Masters is always such a great major. It has it all—pageantry, spectacle and deep, rich history. No matters who receives the heralded green jacket, I’ll enjoy this special tournament—I hope you do too.
PS: I recently created a How to Have a Master’s Golf Party Guide for Ebay. It does point to Ebay products (I do not profit at all) but it sure was fun to put together. It has a cool little story that goes along with it as well.
