Hazeltine National Golf Club Facts

- Hazeltine National Golf Club is located in Chaska, Minnesota.
- It is a private club and closed to guests not accompanied by a member.
- The course opened in 1962 with Robert Trent Jones as the course architect (after early designs by another architect)
- The course opened under the name Executive Golf Club of Minnesota, However, reception to the name was not favorable so it was renamed Hazeltine National Golf Club in honor of the adjoining Lake Hazeltine.
- Rich Beem won the championship by holding off a charging Tiger Woods, who birdied the last four holes. It was one of the most memorable finishes in championship history.
- The first championship hosted by Hazeltine was the 1966 U.S. Women’s Open, won by Sandra Spuzich
- Rees Jones lengthened tees and added several new bunkers in preparation for the 84th PGA Championship in 2002. The course played at 7,360 yards (6,730 m) as a par 72. Rich Beem was the winner of the championship, with a score of ten under par 278, holding off a surging Tiger Woods, who birdied the last four holes.
- During the 2008 summer the club made many significant changes to the golf course in preparation for the 2009 PGA Championship.
- Some of these changes included adding bunkers onto the Par 4 2nd Hole and adding a new tee box on Hole 12, a par 4 which will now play at almost 520 yards (480 m).
- For the 2009 PGA Championship, the course will be played at 7,678 yards (7,021 m). The rating will be 78.0 and the slope is listed as 155.
- The golf course is hilly, and it has narrow fairways and small greens that are extremely fast

- The 13th hole is a par 3 that plays to a whopping 248 (226 m) yards
- The “signature hole” at Hazeltine: The par four sixteen. The tee shot on the sixteenth must carry 220 yards (201 m) over Hazeltine Lake.
- Johnny Miller said (Hole 16) hole was “probably the hardest four-par I ever played.”
- Hazeltine National GC will be the host of the 41st Ryder Cup in 2016
