Is Golf a Waste of Time?

tiger throwing golf club Is Golf a Waste of Time?Sometimes, yes, it actually feels like a complete waste of time to me. However, at other times golf has become a completely sublime experience.

Why is it a waste of time? For me, I like to play golf fairly competitively.

Heck, I am not even a single digit handicap (but was very close a few years back) but I have tied enough decent rounds together to know what a good round feels like (my lowest score being a 76).

To know the effortless beauty of a golf shot, to actually feel like you have control of your golf ball, to feel that “thud” of solid contact, to make those 6-8 footers that really put good scores on your side.

On the other hand, when I don’t really play much or practice much it really does seem like a waste of time (not always but sometimes) – my timing gets discombobulated, tenseness creeps in, no solid contact (therefore not controlling your distances) it just becomes, well … not fun.

Yeah, yeah, I know it’s just a game and I should be enjoying a walk in the park . . . but when you have played pretty well and then you play like crap, it’s just not a pleasant experience.

And I know the answer. It’s really to play and practice. John has mentioned this several times, most recently in The Truth About Playing Better Golf, so no one to blame but the man in the mirror.

The other factor for me is the time issue. And, of course, this is nothing new. But when you can finish other sports in typically under 2 hours – 4-5 hours of playing bad golf is enough to drive you to the cuckoo house. I guess my other option would be to LEARN how to throw clubs, maybe even read How to Throw a Golf Club.

I have actually been in tournaments with playing partners who have just walked off the course after 9 holes. Just said “I’m done” walked to their car, said “sorry” and took off in the middle of the round. I say that sort of tongue in cheek but I know the feeling all to well.

What to do? Nothing I guess. One day you feel like a combination of Superman and Tiger Woods and the next an incompetent nincompoop. A waste of time? sometimes, sometimes not.
