Golf Swing Turn! Turn! Turn!
So I took a lesson yesterday at the beautiful Crumpin Fox Golf Club in Bernardston, MA.
I did it this late in the year for a couple reasons:
1. I wanted to really have an objective look at my swing, particularly with the driver, as my driving the ball has been marginal at best.
2. I wanted to go into the end of the season with some good thoughts and good swing feelings as I plan to make 2010 my best season ever.
So the main thing the PGA pro noticed is that I was not really making a full golf swing turn.
Funny, because I do quite a bit of stretching and feel like I am fairly flexible for a 46 year old but it wasn’t even close.
It was so eye-opening because (in my mind and body) I FELT like I was making a full turn and so when you do not make a full turn lot’s of bad things can happen. So just because something feels right (and comfortable) to you, it doesn’t mean it’s correct fundamentally.
By making a full turn (which felt so strange at first, like I couldn’t even see the ball) it allows the body and swing to unfold in a much more natural and sequential action.
The results were immediately apparent with my drives heading straighter and farther than they have in a long time. It sometimes amazes me that just 1 simple thing can make such a huge difference.
This, by the way, is not a new issue for me. I mentioned a while back that I visited teaching pro Tommy Toski (bother of famed teacher Bobby) in my article My 2008 Golfing “Tip of the Year” and he mentioned the 10 second drill (check out the article for an explanation) but was all about completing the turn.
The other issue is my plane is way to steep so I am going to work on flattening it which will, coincidentally, produces a better turn.
And, believe it or not, this was the first time my swing was videotaped. Seeing yourself on film, and in slow motion, really gives you that objective feedback that you need to start addressing your weak points.
Once I get the video back I am going to try to post it here so you can see what *exactly* I am referencing.
My recommendation is: it’s never to late to see your PGA Pro. They can spot something in a second and before you know it your back on track. Of course, it does take practice to integrate, but, at least you know your practicing properly and with purpose.
Mike Pedersen, from Perform Better Golf, has a nice Full Shoulder Turn Golf Drill. Check it out.
