Anyone who’s learning the game now probably doesn’t realize how lucky they are. The advances in golf instruction in the last 5 years have been phenomenal. I’m not saying guys like Harvey Penick weren’t terrific instructors. A great instructor is a unique individual who understands the game, and more importantly, how to teach! They have existed as long as golfers have been taught.
What’s changed is what we know about the swing thanks to modern technology like high speed cameras and sophisticated swing analyzers. We have discovered things about what happens during the swing that just weren’t possible before the technology came along. The benefit for the amateur and pro alike is no more guess work in knowing how a ball should be struck and how your own swing deviates from that if you have the data and instructor to help you.
With the advent of the internet, today’s amateur can learn what really happens during the swing, see wonderful slow motion videos of the best swings available as well as having access to hundreds of drills to improve. I’m not suggesting you abandon the teaching pro. A good instructor can help you understand and correct your swing in ways you alone could never do. But, you can expedite the process dramatically by availing yourself of the excellent tools available.
If you get the Golf Channel, then you have access to the person who knows more about the golf swing than anyone else alive today and that’s Martin Hall. If you’re serious about getting better, I won’t believe you until you tell me you watch Martin religiously. He is a wealth of information, but more importantly he can break things down into understandable concepts and drills. And he walks the talk with his demonstrations. Plus he’s got the data to back up everything he says. My hat goes off to the Golf Channel for finding Martin and then giving him the School of Golf time slot.
If you read this blog then you know I’m a big fan of Martin Chuck as well. I first discovered Martin via the Revolution Golf daily training videos. I’ve never seen a golf instructor who could speak more clearly and make better practical demonstrations. I’m a visual learner and just watching Martin hit balls make me feel like a better golfer.
If you pay attention to Martin Hall and Martin Chuck and can get some video analysis of your swing, then you are well on your way to becoming the player you hoped. No more excuses!
