Core Performance Golf: The Training Program That Will Set Your Game Free
I read the Mark Verstegan book, Core Performance Golf: The Revolutionary Training and Nutrition Program for Success On and Off the Course, over the holidays and give it a two thumbs up.
Many of you know Mark Verstegen as the head of Athletes’ Performance and THE place elite athletes go for cutting edge exercise science, nutrition and sport specific training programs.
So he knows a thing or two about optimizing athletic performance.
The book is divided into 4 parts:
Core Performance Golf Mindset, Core Performance Golf Movement, Core Performance Golf Nutrition and Core Performance Golf Workout
Probably like you, I read a lot of golf magazines. books, etc. but a lot of this information was really new and very eye-opening. For example, there is a part of the Core Performance Program that deals with “Regeneration” and “Trigger Points.”
Verstegen makes the case that athletic performance should include these typically under-utilized facets in your overall Core Performance Program. This is accomplished through various exercises with a hard foam roller and a speciality piece of equipment (like a long dowel) that you use for self massage.
Well, I am here to tell you that I did get the foam roller (and it is HARD) and my 45 year old body definitely had some knots and many “sore-spots.” It was like nothing I have ever done before.
Speaking of the foam roller, there were also a number of very cool exercise training aids introduced – including a specific type of medicine ball, exercise “sliders”, some specific bands, unique use of tennis balls and a few others that assist with these unique exercises.
The exercises combine a pre-workout, stretching, strength and regeneration. The program is broken down into 3 levels. Par 3, Par 4, and Par 5 (being the most advanced)
I also might add that the program is not time consuming. Of course, you can do more if you choose but the “Core” program is typically not much more than 30 minutes, which was also appealing to me.
If you are looking for a cutting-edge program that targets golf specifically I would encourage you the check out the book. if it is good enough for Tom Lehman, Natalie Gulbis and a host of other PGA pros it should probably work for you too.
